In the cruel world of weight gain and obesity struggles, many of us started paying more attention to how much and what kind of food we eat. For instance, we all love bread, it is tasty, filling, and with different kinds of spread on top is just hard to resist. But are you aware of the difference between white flour bread and whole grains bread?
Both, the white flour bread and the whole grains bread belong to the group of carbohydrates. However, the first one belongs to the group of bad carbohydrates and the second one to the group of good carbohydrates.
If you want to find out more about carbohydrates and why some of us prefer the good ones read our short article which focuses on:
- difference between good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates
- why they are essential for our diet
- what carbohydrates are
The Importance Of Carbohydrates
In biochemistry, carbohydrates are molecules which consist of three types of atoms: oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon, which is where their name comes from.
In nutrition, they, together with fats and proteins, belong to the group of macronutrients and are essential for our daily healthy diet.
Carbohydrates are elements that help our brain and body function. They help us think and move our muscles, as well as do our everyday activities. They are also sources of Glucose (blood sugar). When the Glucose enters our body through the carbs we eat, they are broken down into simple sugars and then absorbed into the bloodstream. As the level of sugar rises, our pancreas releases Insulin, a hormone that allows our bodies to use Glucose. The Insulin then helps the sugar to be transferred from the blood to the cells. The excess of sugar gets stored in our cells as fat and the rest we use as energy.
This is the reason why we must not exclude carbs from our diet. Otherwise, we will feel weak and without energy.
Good Carbohydrates Vs. Bad Carbohydrates
Depending on the chemical makeup, we can divide carbohydrates into three main parts:
- Fiber – our body cannot digest it, and it passes through our bodies undigested. It comes from tubers, grains, nuts, vegetables, and fruits. It doesn’t bring calories to your body, but it helps our intestinal system to stay healthy and clean, controls our blood sugar, etc.
- Starches – when our body digests them, they broke into Glucose. They come from grains and starchy vegetables.
- Sugar – like Glucose, Fructose, Galactose, Sucrose. It comes from foods that are sweet.
Furthermore, we can classify carbohydrates into simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.
Simple carbohydrates are also known as bad carbohydrates. You can find them in all the foods that contain added sugars. When these types of carbs are consumed, our body needs less time to digest them. As a result, the body quickly loses energy, and we feel hungry very soon after we eat them.
Bad carbohydrates are:
- high in cholesterol, trans fats, calories, sodium
- full of refined sugars
- lack nutrients
- low in fiber
Complex carbohydrates (starches) on the other hand, are known as good carbohydrates. When your body receives complex carbs, it needs more time to digest. Unlike bad carbs, when you consume good carbs you feel more satisfied, and don’t feel hunger for a longer time.
Good carbohydrates are:
- free from refined sugars
- almost cholesterol free
- high in nutrients
- low in calories
- trans fats free
- low in sodium
- high in fiber
You might say: but good carbs also contain sugar. Yes, it is true, but the difference is that it is much healthier to eat an apple than a piece of cake. This is because complex carbs contain vitamins, minerals, and fiber, or some elements that your body needs. Bad carbs, on the other hand, don’t contain any vitamins or minerals, so why eat them?
In the long run, bad carbohydrates are damaging to your health and will not help with your weight loss.
To Wrap It Up!
Carbohydrates play an essential role in our lives. They boost us with energy, maintain our brain and body functions, and keep us healthy. So, next time when you go shopping, remember to choose whole grains bread instead of white flour bread.
Always choose good carbohydrates over bad carbohydrates since they are full of vitamins and minerals. If you struggle with excessive weight or simply face difficulties getting rid of your extra pounds, good carbs will help. It takes longer for our body to digest them, meaning we’ll stay full for a longer time and yet we’ll lose calories.
